The holiday season is in full swing, and with that means plenty of things to see and do! This weekend is no exception and has no shortage of ways to get festive, so you won’t find yourself at a loss for things to do. Below is a roundup of just some of the events going on around the area this weekend. Check our previous blog post for even more events going on this weekend and beyond.

Saturday December 2

47th Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Parade in Old Town Alexandria 11 AM – 1 PM

If you’ve never attended this annual parade, you definitely should at least once. The lively and fun parade features Scottish bagpipes and drums, as well as dancers, dogs, classic cars, & of course Santa Claus. 

Takoma Park Alternative Gift Fair in Takoma Park, MD 12 PM -4 PM

We all have someone on our gift list that has everything they already need, so it can be tough to find a meaningful gift to give. The Alternative Gift Fair offers the perfect solution by allowing you to find charities to donate in your gift recipient’s name and honor. Charities can be matched to their interests and donations will make a tremendous and positive impact on those in need. There will also be live music, children’s activities, a bake sale, a raffle, and much more. Admission is free.

Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights in Old Town Alexandria5:30 PM – 9 PM

With the Scottish Walk and other festivities happening prior to this, Old Town Alexandria is the place to be this Saturday (and the whole weekend, really). The boat parade features dozens of boats all lit up for the holidays and it stretches for one mile, from Founders Park to Ford’s Landing City Park. The Facebook event page has a link to a list of recommended viewing areas.

District Holiday Boat Parade at the Wharf DC 4 PM – 10 PM

For those across the river in D.C. they’ll have their own opportunity to enjoy some holiday lights on the water. Leading up to the big parade, there will be plenty of things to do, including listening to some live music, ice skating, and enjoying some libations in the Waterfront Wine & Beer Garden. The boat parade kicks off at 7 PM and after the parade there will be a fireworks display, which begins at 8 PM.

Sunday December 3

Sensory Friendly Santa Springfield Town Center 9 AM – 11 AM

This fantastic event is being held so that families with special needs can share a visit with Santa in a calming environment before public hours begin. Admission is free, though they do ask that you register at the link provided to reserve a space for your group.

Old Town TubaChristmas! in Old Town Alexandria 3 PM – 4 PM

A new tradition is taking root in Old Town this weekend, TubaChristmas! Come out to listen and enjoy, or even to participate, as participation is open to the public and to all skill levels. For those musicians interested in partaking, registration runs from 12 PM – 1 PM and costs $10. Rehearsal will go from 1 PM – 2:30 PM and then the concert will begin at 3 PM. The concert is free for all.

Torpedo Factory Winter Party in Old Town Alexandria 4 PM – 7:30

After the TubaChristmas! concert, why not head over to the Torpedo Factory for their winter party? The party includes drinks, hors d’oeuvres, an art raffle, as well as plenty of unique artwork to shop and local artists to meet. Registration to attend is free.

All Weekend

Native Art Market in D.C. Both Days 10 AM – 5:30 PM

This will be a great chance to find a gift for the collectors in your life. The market features both traditional and contemporary works made by Native American artists. There will be jewelry, textiles, fine art, pottery, basketry and much more. Admission is free.

DMV Night Market at The Block in Annandale, VA Saturday 12 PM – 10 PM & Sunday 12 PM – 8 PM

Don’t let the name fool you, this event begins at noon both Saturday & Sunday though it does go on into the night. Bring your appetite, as there will be over 20 food trucks and other food vendors. In addition, there will be live entertainment and games. One-day admission costs $5 and can be purchased ahead of time or on-site.
